How It Works
A comprehensive guide to understanding your GPA, CGPA, and how our calculator works.
What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It represents your academic performance during a single semester.
Each course is assigned a certain number of Credit Hours (usually indicating the hours of instruction per week). Your letter grade in that course is mapped to a numerical Grade Point (e.g., A = 4.0).
By multiplying the credit hours by the grade points, you get the Quality Points for that course.
GPA Example
Suppose you took two courses:
| Course | Credits | Grade | Points | Quality Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Math 101 | 3.0 | A | 4.00 | 3.0 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
| English 101 | 2.0 | B+ | 3.30 | 2.0 × 3.30 = 6.60 |
| Total | 5.0 | - | - | 18.60 |
GPA = 18.60 / 5.0 = 3.72
What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It represents your overall academic performance across all completed semesters.
Because some semesters might have more credit hours than others, you cannot simply average your semester GPAs together. You must calculate a weighted average based on the credit hours.
CGPA Example
Suppose you have completed two semesters:
| Semester | GPA | Credits | Weighted Pts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 3.50 | 15.0 | 3.50 × 15.0 = 52.50 |
| Semester 2 | 3.80 | 18.0 | 3.80 × 18.0 = 68.40 |
| Total | - | 33.0 | 120.90 |
CGPA = 120.90 / 33.0 = 3.66
